Awesomenauts is a 2D video game of the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) genre. It was developed by Ronimo Games and released for the XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3 in May 2012, with the PC release a few months later, on August 2012. Versions for the OS X, Linux and PlayStation 4 also exist, with a port to Xbox One in the works.

Awesomenauts combines the typical elements of the MOBA genre, such as heroes, currency, items and objectives with platforming elements. The default mode matches consist of 2 opposing teams (red and blue) with 3 players or AI-controlled characters on each side. Players control "Awesomenauts", each with their own unique abilities and playstyles and their goal is to take out turrets which protect the main objective of the match: the Solar Drill. The team that destroys the enemy team's Solar Drill first wins the game. A team cannot have two of the same Awesomenaut, although it is possible to have the same Awesomenaut on different teams. Turrets automatically fire on nearby enemy targets and have a lot of health, so players on both sides most rely on droids to go ahead and take shots for them while also attacking the turrets to gradually wear down their health. Matches take place in several different maps, each with its own theme and features.

The game has other features such as a ranked leaderboard and different game modes.

Story

For more details on the universe, see Lore.

In the year 3587, a galaxy-wide war takes place between two robot armies: the 0s (zeroes) and the 1s (ones). They fight for control over Solar: a rare and valuable liquid metal. The robots hire mercenaries called Awesomenauts to fight on their behalf.

Some time during this war, Starstorm Station reactivated, beginning the events of the first expansion. Later on, Professor Yoolip would return from the past, kicking off the events of Overdrive.

In August 2013, Ronimo Games opened a Kickstarter project for Awesomenauts: Starstorm, an expansion pack for Awesomenauts which was successfully funded, even exceeding their original $125,000 goal. Originally planned to include 3 new characters (Ted McPain, Sentry X-58 and Skree), spectator mode, global chat and new music, the project met several stretch goals, allowing for a new map, extra characters (Penny Fox and Nibbs), and several additional features, such as custom games and replays.

It contained improvements to matchmaking, sprite updates for older characters, and three new Awesomenauts: Professor Milton Yoolip, Chucho Krokk and Jimmy And The Lux5000. A fourth Awesomenaut (Max Focus) was later added.
